Tipping in Atlanta
The Tipping Guide
Tipping in the United States is not optional in most service contexts — Georgia restaurant servers earn the federal-minimum tipped wage of $2.13/hour, and tips are how they make a living. Not tipping is considered very rude and can cause confrontation. Budget for it.
| Service | Expected Tip | Notes |
| Sit-down restaurant | 18–22% | 18% minimum, 20% standard, 25% for excellent service |
| Food delivery | 15–20% | Already suggested in the app — don't go below 15% |
| Uber / Lyft | 10–15% | Optional but expected for good service |
| Taxi | 15–20% | Round up generously |
| Hotel housekeeping | $3–5 per night | Leave cash daily — staff changes |
| Hotel bellhop / luggage | $2–3 per bag | Cash tip at time of service |
| Coffee shop (counter) | $1–2 / optional | Pre-loaded tip on card screen — you can press "No Tip" |
| Food truck | 15–20% | Often cash — have small bills |
| Stadium food/drink | Not required | No tip expected at stadium concession stands |
Atlanta Sales Tax: Georgia state sales tax is 4%, but Fulton County (Atlanta) adds local taxes for a total of 8.9%. This is added at checkout — prices on menus and tags do not include tax. Budget accordingly: a $20 meal becomes $21.78 before tip. Hotel rooms add an additional 16% room tax + $5/night fee.

Budget Tips
✓Shop at Trader Joe's or Publix — Publix is the South's beloved grocery chain (multiple Atlanta locations) and significantly cheaper than Whole Foods. Great for breakfast, picnic supplies, and late-night snacks.
✓MARTA beats rideshare every time — $2.50 vs $30-60 on match days. Get a Breeze Card at any MARTA station ($2 + load) or use Apple Pay/Google Pay at the gate.
✓Centennial Olympic Park (FIFA Fan Festival), the MLK Birth Home + Ebenezer Baptist, the Skyview Atlanta ferris wheel viewing platforms, and Piedmont Park are all free — multiple world-class Atlanta experiences at no cost.
✓Eat at the Varsity, Busy Bee Cafe, or Taqueria del Sol — Atlanta's most-iconic foods are also the cheapest. Chili dogs $3, fish tacos $3, soul food plates $15-20.
✓Centennial Park Olympic Park, Piedmont Park, and Chastain Park all run free summer concerts during World Cup weeks. Check schedules.
✓Book hotels now — prices rise every week as the tournament approaches. Booking 3+ months out saves 30-50% vs. last-minute rates during match weeks. The Semifinal week (July 12-14) will be the most expensive.
✓Group dining: Antico Pizza sells whole 12-inch Neapolitan pies for $20-25 — feeds a family. Krog Street Market and Ponce City Market food halls let groups order across multiple stalls and split.
