Speaking NorCal

Phrases & Culture Guide

The Bay Area has its own dialect — "hella" instead of "very," "the City" only ever means SF, "San Fran" is a tourist tell that locals hate. Add tech-culture quirks, hippie-progressive politics, and the SF-vs-South-Bay-vs-Oakland regional split. Here's what visitors need to know.

Essential American Slang

Words You'll Hear

Hella
Bay Area's signature word — means "very" or "really." "It's hella foggy," "this taqueria is hella good." Originated in Oakland in the 1980s, now NorCal-wide. Use it freely.
You guys
Plural "you." Bay Area mostly says "you guys" — gender-neutral.
Stoked
Excited, pumped up. California surf-culture origin. "I'm stoked for the match."
Sketchy
Suspicious or unreliable. "That neighborhood looks sketchy."
Check
The bill at a restaurant. "Can we get the check?"
Restroom
Toilet / bathroom. "Where's the restroom?" is the polite phrasing.
To-go
"Take-away" in American English. "Can I get this to-go?"
Soccer
What everyone in the US calls football. The Earthquakes (San Jose MLS) have built a strong soccer culture in the South Bay. "Football" here means the NFL/49ers.

Bay Area Local Lingo

Speaking NorCal

The Bay Area has a distinct vocabulary shaped by tech culture, hippie heritage, and the deep regional split between SF, Oakland, and the South Bay.

The City
San Francisco, and ONLY San Francisco. "Going to the City" = going to SF. Locals never say "San Fran" (tourist tell). "Frisco" is debated.
The Bay
The whole region — SF + Oakland + San Jose + Peninsula + Marin. "The Bay" is bigger than just "the City."
BART vs MUNI
BART = regional rail (SFO, Oakland, the East Bay). MUNI = SF's local transit. Caltrain = SF-to-South-Bay. VTA = San Jose / stadium light rail.
The 415 / 510 / 408
Area codes = neighborhood pride. 415 = SF. 510 = Oakland / East Bay. 408 = San Jose. 650 = Peninsula. "I'm from the 510" = Oakland.
Karl the Fog
SF's famous summer fog — the city personifies it on Twitter (@KarlTheFog). Karl rolls in mid-morning and evening, blanketing the western half of SF in cool gray. Locals embrace him.
Mission burrito
SF's signature food. La Taqueria is canonical (James Beard winner). Don't say "Chipotle-style" in the Mission.
Sourdough
SF's signature bread — Boudin Bakery (1849) has the original culture, still in use. Locals prefer Tartine Country Bread.
The Stadium Is in Santa Clara
Levi's Stadium is NOT in San Francisco — it's 45 mi south in Santa Clara. Sore point for SF locals (the 49ers moved from SF in 2014). Don't call Levi's "the SF stadium" in front of a real San Franciscan.
Tech Bro
Pejorative for tech-industry transplant culture. Often used about Marina / SoMa demographics.
The Town
Oakland — proud East Bay identity. Distinct from SF. Hyphy hip-hop / sideshow culture, the A's, Black cultural pride.
Bet / On God / Clutch
"Bet" = OK / agreed. "On God" = seriously, truly. "Clutch" = useful or important. Common Bay Area slang.
Marina Girl / Mission Hipster
SF social tribes. Marina = sorority / wine / lululemon culture. Mission = artist / coffee snob / fixed-gear-bike culture. Different SF, same city.

Things You'll Get Wrong

Cultural Differences That Catch People Out

💵
Tipping is mandatory
California has $20/hr minimum wage but tipping culture is unchanged. 18-22% at restaurants. Many SF restaurants automatically add 18-20% service charge — check before tipping again.
🌡️
SF Is Not Warm
SF in June-July averages 65°F (18°C) with cool fog. Pack a fleece + windbreaker. Santa Clara (the stadium) is 80°F (27°C). Mark Twain's joke applies.
🚇
4 transit systems, 1 card
BART, MUNI, Caltrain, VTA all accept the Clipper Card — buy at any station vending machine for $3 + load. Saves enormous hassle.
⏱️
SF to stadium is 90 min
Levi's Stadium is 45 mi south of SF. Allow 90 min via Caltrain + VTA. Don't underestimate this commute.
🥤
Free refills are real
Soft drinks come with unlimited free refills at most American restaurants.
🌉
Don't say "San Fran"
Locals hate "San Fran." Safe: "SF" or "the City." Avoid "Frisco" too — debated.
🍺
Always carry your passport
US bars card everyone under 40. Government-issued photo ID required for alcohol. Passport is safest.
💊
Healthcare is very expensive
A US hospital visit without insurance costs thousands. Buy comprehensive travel insurance before you fly. Non-negotiable.
🏠
Homelessness is visible
SF has a visible homelessness/drug crisis, especially in the Tenderloin and around Civic Center. Use BART carefully late. Tourist areas are safer.
💻
Tech industry dominates
South Bay = world tech capital. Apple, Google, Meta, Nvidia, Stanford. Conversations about startups, AI, IPOs are everywhere.
🌱
Progressive politics
SF is one of America's most-progressive cities — LGBTQ+ movement (Castro), environmental movement, hippie counterculture all rooted here.
🍃
Cannabis is legal
Recreational cannabis is legal for adults 21+ in California. Don't smoke in public spaces or stadiums. Don't take it across state lines.
