Airport Arrival Guide

✈️ Guadalajara GDL

Aeropuerto Internacional Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla (GDL) sits in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, ~17 km south of central Guadalajara and ~25 km from Estadio Akron in Zapopan. There is no direct rail or BRT to GDL airport — your options are taxi (voucher-based, safe) or Uber/Didi. US fans need only a passport; Mexico's electronic FMM is auto-issued via the airline manifest. Operated by GAP (Aeropuertos GAP).

The Airport

GDL Overview

GDL is Mexico's third-busiest airport and the largest in western Mexico — heavy US-Mexico LCC traffic, especially Volaris and Viva Aerobus, plus AA, UA, DL, AS, WN, and Aeroméxico full-service.

🛬
Terminal 1
Main international + domestic terminal. All carriers currently operate from T1 unless they've moved to T2 stages.
🏗️
Terminal 2 (staged)
Under construction / staged opening. GAP has accelerated T2 commissioning specifically for World Cup traffic — expect signage chaos and partial capacity. Verify which terminal your flight uses on aeropuertosgap.com.mx.
✈️
Direct routes
US: LAX, DFW, IAH, ORD, ATL, JFK, SFO, OAK, SEA, LAS, PHX, DEN, MIA, MCO, MSP — heavy LCC presence on Volaris, Viva Aerobus, AA, UA, DL, AS, WN. Europe: limited; most European fans connect via MEX or DFW. Domestic: hub for Volaris.

Immigration & Customs

FMM & Migración

Same as MEX: US fans need a passport; the electronic FMM is auto-issued via airline manifest; Mexico has no eTA / ESTA-style pre-arrival. INM has confirmed staffing increases at GDL for the tournament window.

📘
FMM (electronic)
Auto-issued at airport arrivals. You may receive a stamped paper slip — keep it for departure (some airlines still ask). For land border crossings (Houston → Mexico), the FMM is paper and there's a small fee.
FIFA priority lane
INM has announced additional officers and a FIFA priority lane at GDL for ticketed match-day passengers — verify on gob.mx/inm closer to your match.
⏱️
Wait times
Normal: 30-60 min. Match-day surge expected. GDL T1 arrivals can bottleneck when transatlantic and transpacific waves overlap; build cushion if you have a tight stadium kickoff.

Ground Transit

From GDL

There is no direct rail or Mi Macro BRT to GDL airport — your sane options are an authorized taxi (voucher-based at the desk inside arrivals) or Uber/Didi from the designated rideshare zone. Public bus is technically possible but slow and not luggage-friendly.

🚖
Authorized taxi
~$350-450 MXN to Centro / ~$400-550 MXN to Zapopan / Akron area. Buy the voucher at Taxis Autorizados GDL inside arrivals before exiting. Pre-priced by zone, no metering, no surprises.
🚗
Uber / Didi
~$250-400 MXN to Centro. Both legal at GDL. Designated pickup zone (the app will direct you). ~30 min in normal traffic, 45+ min match-day.
🚌
Public bus 175A / 176
Cheap (~$10-15 MXN) but slow and not luggage-friendly. Drops at peripheral metro/BRT connections; you'll still need a transfer to Centro. Realistic only for budget travelers without much luggage.
🏟️
GDL → Estadio Akron
No direct rail. Taxi or Uber is the realistic option — ~30-40 min, ~$400-500 MXN. Mi Macro Periférico BRT connects nearby districts to Akron but does not reach the airport. If you're flying same-day for the match, build a 60-min cushion on top of normal travel.
⚠️ NEVER take a libre taxi from outside GDL terminal. Libre taxis (unmarked or unaffiliated street cabs) in Guadalajara have a documented robbery problem. Always buy the voucher at the official Taxis Autorizados desk inside arrivals before exiting, or use Uber/Didi from the designated rideshare zone. Refuse drivers who approach you inside or just outside the terminal.

Money, Phones, Practicalities

On Arrival

🏦
ATMs & FX
Use major-bank ATMs only: BBVA, Banorte, Santander, Citibanamex. Avoid standalone non-major ATMs and casas de cambio with >6% spread. Currency-exchange counters at GDL have poor rates compared with a major-bank ATM.
📶
SIM / eSIM
Telcel has the best coverage across Jalisco. AT&T Mexico is an alternative. Prepaid SIMs available at retail kiosks in arrivals. Airalo / Holafly eSIM for Mexico activates before you land.
💵
Currency
Mexican peso (MXN). $1 USD ≈ 17-19 MXN. Cards accepted in restaurants and chain hotels; cash dominant in markets, taquerías, and outside the tourist core. Tip 10-15% in restaurants.
📅
2026 quirks
GAP has added charter slots from US gateways (LAX, DFW, IAH, ORD) for the tournament. T2 commissioning is happening in stages — confirm your terminal before arriving and allow extra time for signage confusion.
Common pitfalls: ① No direct transit from GDL — plan for taxi or Uber. ② Always use the authorized taxi voucher desk inside the terminal; never a libre. ③ Verify your terminal (T1 vs T2 staged) before driving to the airport. ④ Avoid currency-exchange counters at the airport — major-bank ATM is cheaper.
