✈️ Airport Guide

George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and Hobby Airport (HOU) — how to arrive, navigate, and reach NRG Stadium or your hotel.

IAH HOU

Step by Step

Arriving at IAH

George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is Houston's main international airport, 27 miles north of Downtown. Most World Cup visitors flying internationally will land here. Terminal D handles international arrivals.

01
Land & Clear Immigration
International arrivals land at Terminal D. Follow signs to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Have your passport, customs declaration form, and onward travel info ready. The Mobile Passport app or Global Entry kiosk speeds up clearance significantly.
→ Global Entry lanes are dramatically faster — worth enrolling before your trip
02
Collect Baggage
Baggage carousels are at the lower level of Terminal D. Check the overhead displays for your flight's carousel. Baggage claim at IAH typically takes 20–35 minutes after landing.
→ Oversized baggage (golf bags, bicycles) is collected at a separate claim area — signs point the way
03
Get Ground Transport
Exit baggage claim to the Ground Transportation level (lower level, follow the signs). Uber/Lyft pickup is on the lower level outside door 8 (Terminal D). Rental car shuttles run from the lower level. METRO Airport Direct bus (102 Express) stops at the upper level departures.
→ Rideshare is usually the fastest and most convenient option for most visitors
04
Get a SIM Card or Enable Roaming
International visitors should get a US SIM card or enable international roaming before leaving the airport. Kiosks in the terminals sell prepaid SIM cards from T-Mobile and AT&T. Airalo offers affordable eSIM plans you can activate on your phone.
→ You'll need data for Uber, Google Maps, and FIFA ticket apps
05
Head to Your Hotel
Downtown Houston is 27 miles south of IAH. Rideshare takes 35–55 minutes depending on traffic. The Medical Center / NRG Stadium area is 30–45 minutes. Check in, rest, and plan your first Houston match day.
→ I-45 South is the main corridor — traffic is heaviest 7–9am and 4–7pm on weekdays

Essential Airport Tips

Download the FIFA app before arriving — you'll need it for mobile tickets. Do this on home WiFi, not airport data.
Download Uber and Lyft before you land. US phone numbers are required for full account setup — use a US eSIM or your home carrier roaming.
Currency: most Houston businesses accept cards. But some taquerias and food trucks are cash-only. Get $100–200 USD cash at an airport ATM.
Houston heat: June/July temperatures are 90–97°F (32–36°C) with very high humidity. Your first step outside the terminal will be intense. Dress in light, breathable clothing.
Match day surge: Uber and Lyft prices from IAH to NRG Stadium can spike to $80–120 on match days. Book a hotel with METRORail access and take the train instead.
