Tipping in Houston

The Tipping Guide

Tipping in the United States is not optional in most service contexts — it is how service workers earn a living wage. Not tipping is considered very rude and can cause confrontation. Budget for it.

Budget Tips

Shop at HEB — Texas's beloved grocery chain is everywhere in Houston and significantly cheaper than Whole Foods or Kroger. Great for breakfast, picnic supplies, and late-night snacks.
METRORail beats rideshare every time — $1.25 vs $20-40 on match days. Get a Q Card and use it for every trip near the Red Line.
Museum of Fine Arts Houston is free every Thursday evening — one of the great art museums in the US, completely free.
Eat at taquerias and food trucks — the best Tex-Mex in Houston is cheap. Tacos Tierra Caliente, Tacos A Go Go, and neighborhood trucks are better than tourist restaurants and cost $3–8 per person.
Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park has free performances all summer. Check the schedule — it often coincides with World Cup weeks.
Book hotels now — prices rise every week as the tournament approaches. Booking 3+ months out saves 30–50% vs. last-minute rates during match weeks.
Group dining at dim sum (Fung's Kitchen) — splitting a large dim sum feast costs $15–25/person and you'll eat more and better than a sit-down restaurant at 3x the price.
