What to Expect

Houston Summer Reality

Houston has a Gulf Coast subtropical climate. June and July are the hottest, most humid months of the year. International visitors — especially from temperate climates — are often shocked by the intensity of Houston's summer. Here's exactly what to expect.

🌡️
The Temperature Is Just the Start
The official temperature of 94–96°F (34–36°C) understates how it feels. Add 70–85% humidity and the heat index — the "feels like" temperature — regularly reaches 105–115°F (40–46°C). This is the equivalent of standing in a sauna. Prolonged exposure without water, shade, or AC is dangerous.
💧
Dehydration Happens Fast
You'll sweat continuously in Houston's humidity, even without exertion. Drink 3–4 liters of water per day. Add electrolyte supplements (Liquid IV, Nuun, sports drinks) — plain water alone doesn't replace what you lose. Keep a water bottle with you at all times.
⛈️
Afternoon Thunderstorms
Gulf moisture creates powerful afternoon convective storms that build most days between 2pm and 6pm. These can be severe — heavy rain, lightning, occasional hail. They typically pass in 30–60 minutes. Carry a small umbrella. If you hear thunder, seek shelter immediately — lightning in Houston is extremely dangerous.
🏟️
NRG Stadium Is Fully Air-Conditioned
This is a major advantage of Houston as a World Cup host. NRG Stadium is a domed, fully air-conditioned venue — once inside, you're comfortable regardless of the heat outside. The challenge is getting there: the walk from parking lots or the METRORail station to the stadium gates can be 10–20 minutes of intense sun exposure.
🌊
Flooding Risk
Houston is famously flat and prone to flash flooding from intense storms. Low-lying areas can flood quickly. If you see water over a road, turn around — "turn around, don't drown" is real advice for Houston. On foot, stay on elevated sidewalks during heavy rain. The city's drainage system handles most storms, but extreme events can overwhelm it.

Match Day Weather Tips

Staying Comfortable

Morning Kickoffs (before 1pm)
Temperatures start around 78–82°F with high humidity. Still hot but the most manageable part of the day. Apply sunscreen before leaving your hotel.
Afternoon Kickoffs (1–5pm)
Peak heat. Heat index can reach 108–112°F. Arrive early and spend maximum time in air-conditioned spaces. Bring electrolytes and water. Watch for storm clouds building.
Evening Kickoffs (after 6pm)
Temperatures drop to 85–90°F by 7pm but humidity stays high. Lightning risk from afternoon storms passing. Most comfortable of the day. Still warm — light clothing appropriate.
Inside NRG Stadium
Fully air-conditioned to ~70°F (21°C). Can feel cold if you're soaked from outdoor heat. A light jacket or layer in your clear bag is worth it for the AC contrast.
