Best Day Trips
Beyond Kansas City
A rental car is essential for most of these — Kansas City sits at the geographic center of the country, so multiple regional destinations are reachable within 1-4 hours. The Royals home schedule may overlap match-day weekends; check Kauffman Stadium events if you're considering a baseball day.
Best Half-Day · College Town
Lawrence, KS
45 min west via I-70 · Home of the University of Kansas
The most accessible day trip from KC and a complete change of pace — Lawrence is a classic Big-12 college town with a walkable historic Massachusetts Street ("Mass St"), the University of Kansas campus on the hill, and Allen Fieldhouse (where Phog Allen invented modern basketball coaching). Coffeehouses, bookstores, and indie boutiques line Mass St. Visit the KU Natural History Museum (free) and Spencer Museum of Art (free, on campus). Eat at 715 (farm-to-table) or The Burger Stand at the Casbah (legendary college-town burgers + ginger soda). About 45 min via I-70 west; weekday afternoons are quietest.
History · Truman
Independence, MO
20 min east · Truman Presidential Library & Museum
Independence is a 20-minute drive east of downtown KC and the home of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum — recently renovated (2021), one of the best presidential libraries in the country. Truman's gravesite is in the courtyard. Combine with the Truman Home (his actual house, preserved as he left it in 1972) — National Park Service guided tours, free with reservation. Independence Square has antique shops and a classic county-seat courthouse. Half-day trip, easy combine with KC dinner. Independence Center is also one of the ConnectKC26 Stadium Direct hubs.
Lake Resort · Day or Overnight
Lake of the Ozarks
2.5 hr southeast · Missouri's lake-resort country
Lake of the Ozarks is Missouri's premier lake resort — 1,150 miles of shoreline (more than the entire California coast), hundreds of lakeside bars and restaurants, the Bagnell Dam Strip retail/dining district, and parties on the water that get rowdy on weekends. Rent a boat, jet ski, or pontoon; lunch dockside at Bart's Bar & Grill or Backwater Jack's; the Lake party scene is legendary and Anheuser-Busch-funded. Ha Ha Tonka State Park has hiking and a 1905 castle ruin. Day trip is doable; overnight is better. Two main hub towns: Osage Beach (busier, retail) and Lake Ozark (Bagnell Dam side).
Country Music · Family Attractions
Branson, MO
3.5 hr south · The "Las Vegas of the Ozarks"
Branson is the family-entertainment capital of the central US — country music theaters (~50 of them), Silver Dollar City theme park, the Showboat Branson Belle paddlewheeler, and Table Rock Lake. Cheesy, family-friendly, packed with retirees and tour buses. The Ozark Mountains scenery is genuinely beautiful. Silver Dollar City (Dollywood's sister park) is the best US theme park you've never heard of — wooden coasters, craftsmen demos, 1880s-themed. Branson is a long day trip from KC (3.5 hr each way) — weekend overnight makes more sense. Younger travelers may prefer Lake of the Ozarks instead.
Big City · Sports + Arch
St. Louis, MO
4 hr east via I-70 · Gateway Arch + Cardinals
St. Louis is a serious 4-hour drive east on I-70 but doable as a 1-2 day trip if you have a car and want to see another major Missouri city. The Gateway Arch (630 ft tall, 1965, with a tram to the top) is the obvious must. Cardinals baseball at Busch Stadium if the schedule lines up. Forest Park (bigger than Central Park, with 5 free museums including the St. Louis Art Museum) is the best free attraction in the central US. Eat at Pappy's Smokehouse for the city's best BBQ. Possible as a long day trip; better as overnight.
Off the Beaten Path · Wineries
Weston, MO & Weston Bend State Park
35 min northwest · River-bluff town, Missouri wineries
Weston is a tiny Missouri River bluff town founded in 1837 — antique shops, a 1840s tobacco shop (still operating), and three wineries within a few miles (Pirtle Winery, Weston Wine Co, Holladay Distillery — Missouri's oldest legal distillery). The town itself is two walkable streets of historic buildings; The St. George Hotel (1845) is a classic stay. Weston Bend State Park on the river bluff has 6 miles of trails with Missouri River views. The road from KC to Weston follows the Lewis & Clark trail. Half-day trip; combine with a winery lunch.
State Capital · Brown v Board
Topeka, KS
1 hr west · Kansas State Capitol + Brown v Board NHS
Kansas's state capital, an hour west of KC on I-70. The Kansas State Capitol has a beautifully restored interior, John Steuart Curry murals (the famous "Tragic Prelude" of John Brown), and you can climb to the top of the dome. The Brown v Board of Education National Historic Site in the actual Monroe Elementary School is a moving Civil Rights site. Topeka itself is small — the capitol + NHS is ~3 hours total, easy half-day combine with Lawrence on the way back to KC.
