San Diego is California's most underrated big city — picture-perfect beaches, the world-famous San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, and a 30-minute drive to the Mexican border at Tijuana. Pacific Beach and La Jolla have stunning coastline. The USS Midway Museum (an aircraft carrier you can board) sits in the harbor. San Diego sits between LA and Mexico — easy to combine with a Tijuana day trip if you have a passport.

Joshua Tree National Park
2.5 hrs drive Full day Desert + Stars
Joshua Tree is a desert national park where the Mojave and Colorado deserts meet — surreal landscape of giant boulder formations and the iconic Joshua trees (yucca palms) that look like something out of Dr. Seuss. Hike Hidden Valley, scramble at Skull Rock, climb Ryan Mountain. After dark the park is a designated International Dark Sky Park — one of the best places in Southern California to see the Milky Way.

Las Vegas is 270 miles east of LA — a four-hour drive across the Mojave. The Strip's 4 miles of mega-resorts (Bellagio fountains, Caesars Palace, the Sphere) need no introduction. Worth a 1–2 night detour if you have time. Combine with a stop at the Hoover Dam (45 min outside Vegas) or the Grand Canyon (4 hrs further). Vegas is a 2026 World Cup fan city with watch parties at every casino.

Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is "the American Riviera" — Spanish-style architecture, beaches, palm-lined State Street, and the wine country backbone (you may know it from the film Sideways). The historic Mission Santa Barbara is the queen of California missions. Funk Zone has wine tasting rooms a short walk from the beach. A perfect day trip from LA for visitors who want California coastal wine country without committing to Napa.

Catalina Island

Catalina Island is a small Mediterranean-feeling island 22 miles off the LA coast. The town of Avalon (where the ferry lands) has restaurants, beaches, kayak rentals, and a famous 1929 Casino building. Glass-bottom boat tours, snorkeling, and zip-lining are popular. The ferry runs daily from Long Beach and San Pedro — the trip itself is part of the experience.

Big Bear is a mountain resort town in the San Bernardino mountains — 7,000 ft elevation, alpine lake, pine forests. In summer it's hiking, lake activities (kayaking, fishing, jet ski), and a refreshing 70°F when LA is 90°F. The drive up Highway 18 itself is dramatic. A perfect break from urban LA in summer heat.
