What to Expect

LA Summer Reality

LA has a Mediterranean climate — warm, dry summers and mild winters. June and July sit in the perfect spot: warm enough for beach days, cool enough at night to need a light jacket. The most pleasant time of year to visit. But there are quirks worth knowing.

🌫️
June Gloom is Real
Through June and into early July, mornings often start cool, gray, and overcast — the marine layer rolls in from the Pacific overnight. By 11am or noon, it usually burns off, leaving sunny afternoons. Don't let an overcast morning ruin your beach plans; hold off until lunch and the sun typically appears.
☀️
UV is Strong, Even on Cloudy Days
LA sits at low latitude and sits in clear sky most summer days. The UV index regularly hits 9–10 (very high). Sunburn happens in 30 minutes of unprotected sun. The dry air doesn't mask UV the way humidity does. SPF 50+ sunscreen is mandatory, hat and sunglasses recommended.
🧥
Pack Layers
LA's daily temperature swing is 20–25°F (12–14°C). A 78°F afternoon often becomes a 60°F evening. Beach areas (Santa Monica, Venice) are 5–10°F cooler than inland (Pasadena, Burbank). Always carry a light layer — you'll want it for evening matches and rooftop bars.
🏖️
Pacific Water is Cold
Despite the warm air, Pacific currents keep ocean water 60–68°F (15–20°C) even in July. Surfers wear wetsuits year-round. The water is clean and swimmable but expect ankle-numbing first contact. Rip currents are real — swim near lifeguards (Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa).
🔥
Wildfire Smoke (Possible)
California summers carry wildfire risk. While June matches are usually clear, late July can occasionally see haze from inland fires. Check AirNow.gov for air quality. Asthma sufferers should bring inhalers. Most days during World Cup will be fine, but check before booking outdoor activities.
🏟️
SoFi Stadium Has a Translucent Roof
SoFi has a fixed-roof design with a translucent ETFE membrane that lets natural light in but keeps the temperature regulated. Climate-controlled in any weather. Daytime matches feel like outdoor events with shade; evening matches feel like a closed venue. Expect 70°F (21°C) inside regardless of conditions outside.

Match Day Weather Tips

Staying Comfortable

Morning Kickoffs (before 1pm)
Possibly overcast (June Gloom) and cool — 65–72°F. Light layers. Sun protection still essential as clouds clear.
Afternoon Kickoffs (1–5pm)
Warmest part of the day — 78–88°F. Strong UV. Hat, sunscreen, water. The walk from parking/transit can be hot.
Evening Kickoffs (after 6pm)
Cooling down — 70–78°F at kickoff, dropping into the 60s after dark. Long-sleeve or light jacket worth bringing.
Inside SoFi Stadium
Climate-controlled to ~70°F (21°C). Light jacket in your clear bag handles any temperature drop and the AC.
