Mexico's Muslim community is small but established — roughly 5,000-10,000 in CDMX. Halal-certified restaurants are rare; halal-friendly (Muslim-owned, halal-meat-sourced, but not third-party-certified) is more common. Below: mosques and prayer spaces, the established halal-friendly restaurants, and a self-cater fallback strategy.

Halal-certified vs halal-friendly — the distinction matters. "Halal-certified" means a third-party Islamic body has inspected and verified the kitchen, supply chain, and slaughter. "Halal-friendly" means the owner is Muslim and sources halal meat, but no formal certification — you take the owner at their word. CDMX has very few of the former and a handful of the latter. We've flagged each restaurant below accordingly. If you require formal certification, plan to self-cater or stick to vegetarian.
Mosques & Prayer
Where to Pray
🕌
Centro Educativo de la Comunidad Musulmana en México
Anatole France 56, Polanco. Main Sunni community center — jumu'ah Fridays. The default Friday-prayer spot for visitors staying in Polanco / Reforma.
📿
Centro Salafi al-Mexik
Mexico City. Daily prayers. Smaller community. Confirm address and prayer times via WhatsApp before visiting — many CDMX prayer spaces operate on minimal signage.
☪️
Centro Islámico Ahlul Bayt
Shia community center. Smaller; check social media for current prayer schedule.
✈️
MEX airport prayer rooms
Benito Juárez International — multifaith prayer rooms in T1 and T2, signed "Sala de Oración." ⚠️ Verify exact location at info desk on arrival; positions have shifted with terminal renovations.
Halal-Friendly Restaurants
Where to Eat
All restaurants below are described as halal-friendly by community sources. None hold third-party halal certification unless explicitly noted. Confirm with the restaurant directly on the day.
🇩🇿
La Casbah
Polanco area. Algerian/Moroccan, Muslim-owned. One of the most reliably halal-friendly spots in the city. Tagines, couscous.
🇮🇳
Tandoor
Pakistani/Indian. Halal menu. South-Asian community favorite — biryani, tandoori, kebabs.
🇱🇧
Al Andalus
Centro Histórico, República de Guatemala 26. Long-running Lebanese near Zócalo. Halal meat sourced. Mezze, shawarma, kibbeh.
🌯
Adonis
Polanco. Lebanese, kosher/halal-friendly options. ⚠️ Verify halal sourcing on visit — some menu items may not qualify.
🥙
Beirut Restaurant
Polanco. Lebanese cuisine. ⚠️ Unverified halal certification — confirm with staff before ordering meat dishes.
🌱
Govinda's (vegetarian)
Safe halal-friendly fallback. Hare Krishna vegetarian Indian, multiple locations. No meat at all = no halal-meat sourcing concern. Cheap, filling, plentiful.
Self-Cater
Markets & Supermarkets
For visitors who want certainty, self-catering is the cleanest option. Mercado de San Juan (Centro Histórico) has butchers who source halal meats — ask specifically for "carne halal." Polanco supermarkets (Liverpool Polanco gourmet section, La Comer) carry imported halal-certified meats and frozen halal products from Turkey, Pakistan, and the US. Stock your Airbnb fridge for sandwich/salad lunches and eat out for dinners only.
Practical Notes
Day-to-Day
Pork is everywhere in Mexican cuisine — al pastor, carnitas, chicharrón, chorizo. When ordering at any non-halal-friendly restaurant, default to seafood, chicken (verify it's not cooked with chorizo), or vegetarian. Common safe orders: tacos de pescado (fish), tlayudas without meat, esquites (corn), enchiladas verdes con queso, chilaquiles without chorizo, mole verde with chicken (verify prep). Lard (manteca) is used in many traditional preparations — beans, tamales, tortillas. Ask "¿lleva manteca?" if strict.
Non-alcoholic options like aguas frescas are widely available at virtually all CDMX restaurants and market stalls — ask for sin alcohol (without alcohol) and servers will accommodate without any issue.
