Stadium Transit

🚇 Getting to Estadio Azteca

Estadio Azteca is in Tlalpan, southern Mexico City — about 14 km from Centro Histórico, 25 km from MEX airport. The dominant choice is Metro Línea 2 → Tren Ligero (light rail) direct to Estadio Azteca station (10 MXN, 60-90 min from central CDMX). Uber/Didi works but expect 60-min match-day surge; do NOT use street taxis. Allow 3 hours pre-kickoff for FIFA security perimeter + altitude-adjusted walking pace.

⚠️ Active Disruptions — June 2026
CNTE teacher-union protests: Marches are blocking Insurgentes Sur and Paseo de la Reforma on match days. Uber/Didi routes through these corridors face 30-60 min extra delays. Set Waze/Google Maps to "avoid tolls" and check traffic 90 min before you leave — rerouting via Calzada de Tlalpan is usually faster.

AICM air traffic controller (SINACTA) action: Formal strike proceedings have been filed. Flight delays and short-notice cancellations are possible at Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez (MEX). If flying in for a match, book the earliest same-day or prior-day arrival you can. Keep Mexico City ground transport in mind — NAICM (Felipe Ángeles Airport, NLU) is 45+ km north and only viable if you have a full day buffer.

Your Options

Getting to Azteca

Uber / Didi (rideshare)
$200–500 MXN ($12–30 USD) · Uber typically $20-30, Didi $15-25
Reliable but match-day surge is real. From Centro Histórico to Estadio Azteca: 30-45 min off-peak, 60-90 min match-day. Uber and Didi both work in CDMX — Didi is often $5-10 USD cheaper for the same trip. Set drop-off as "Estadio Azteca - Calzada de Tlalpan" NOT the address of nearby venues. Do NOT use street taxis (libre/Sitio) — meter scams are real and rideshare apps verify the driver.
Pros
  • Door-to-door, no transfers
  • Both Uber and Didi work; compare in-app
  • Late-night option after Metro closes
Cons
  • Match-day surge can 2-3x the fare
  • Stadium-area traffic adds 30-60 min
  • FIFA may close streets within 1 km radius
Driving / Parking
Pre-paid lots $300–600 MXN ($18–36 USD) · severe traffic
Not recommended for international visitors. Mexico City's match-day traffic is brutal, and FIFA closes streets within 1 km of the stadium. Pre-paid lots fill up early; CDMX driving requires understanding Hoy No Circula (no-drive days based on plate digit) which can apply to non-resident plates during high-pollution alerts. If you must drive, book Estadio Azteca's official lots ahead via Ticketmaster or Boletomóvil; expect 2 hours pre-kickoff arrival.

Opening Weekend

Routes to Azteca from your hotel

Mexico hosts the tournament opener on Jun 11, 2026 at Estadio Azteca / Banorte (Tlalpan, southern CDMX). The stadium is geographically in the south of the city, ~20 km from the main hotel-density neighborhoods (Polanco, Roma Norte, Condesa, Juárez). Three viable transit options exist; only the Tren Ligero / Xochimilco light rail runs reliably enough on match days that we recommend it for the opener. Plan 3+ hours from hotel to gate, more if your hotel is north of Reforma.

From Polanco (north of Chapultepec): Total: ~1h 45m. Metro Line 7 from Polanco station to Tasqueña terminus (~50 min, 5 transfers, 5 pesos). At Tasqueña, transfer to Tren Ligero (light rail) — exit Tasqueña metro, walk to Tren Ligero platform (5 min, follow signs), board direction "Estadio Azteca" (~12 min, 3 stops, 3 pesos). Arrive at Estadio Azteca station — 8-min walk to gates. Earlier alternative: Uber from Polanco for ~$15–25 USD, ~50 min in light traffic, 1.5h+ on match day. Avoid driving — no parking near stadium.
From Roma Norte / Condesa (the visitor center of CDMX): Total: ~1h 30m. Metrobús Line 1 northbound from Insurgentes/Sevilla to Indios Verdes is the wrong direction — instead, walk 8 min to Hospital General Metro station (Line 3, blue), travel 13 stops to Tasqueña (35 min, 5 pesos). Transfer at Tasqueña to Tren Ligero — direction "Estadio Azteca" (~12 min, 3 pesos). 8-min walk to gates from station. Earlier alternative: Uber for ~$10–18 USD, ~40 min in light traffic, 1h+ on match day.
From Juárez / Centro Histórico (downtown): Total: ~1h 15m. Metro Line 2 (blue) from Hidalgo or Allende southbound to Tasqueña (~40 min, 5 pesos). Transfer at Tasqueña to Tren Ligero — direction "Estadio Azteca" (~12 min, 3 pesos). 8-min walk to gates. The most predictable route on match day. Earlier alternative: Uber for ~$8–14 USD, ~30 min light traffic, 50min+ match day.
Match-day timing reality. FIFA gates open ~3 hours before kickoff; the Tren Ligero will be packed for the 90 minutes before kickoff. Leave your hotel ~3.5 hours before kickoff to clear the gate without panic. The Tren Ligero runs every 7–10 minutes on match day with extra service; the metro runs normal service. Do not book a return Uber from the stadium — surge pricing will be 3–5x for the hour after the final whistle, and hailing through the crowd takes longer than just walking back to the Tren Ligero.

From the Airport

MEX (Benito Juárez) to the City

Mexico City has two airports — MEX (Benito Juárez Intl) in the eastern part of the city (T1 + T2) and NLU (Felipe Ángeles Intl) 50 km north. Most international flights use MEX. From MEX to Centro Histórico is ~12 km / 30-45 min by taxi/Uber, or 60 min by Metro.

🚇
Metro Línea 5
$5 MXN ($0.30 USD). From MEX T1 → Terminal Aérea (yellow line, Línea 5). Connect at Pantitlán to other lines. Cheapest option, but with a suitcase the transfer hike is rough. Best for solo travelers with a backpack.
🚐
Authorized airport taxi
$300–600 MXN ($18–36 USD) via official kiosk inside MEX (Sitio 300 or Confort). Pay at kiosk, get a voucher, walk to taxi rank. Fixed-rate; no meter games. Look for the orange-and-white "Taxi Autorizado" stand.
🚗
Uber / Didi from MEX
$200–400 MXN ($12–24 USD), varies with surge. Pickup is at arrivals exit, NOT the curbside — designated rideshare zones (signage in English). Cheaper than authorized taxi; verify driver license plate matches the app.
🚌
Metrobús Línea 4
$30 MXN ($1.80 USD). From MEX T1/T2 directly to Centro Histórico (Buenavista/Reforma). Air-conditioned, runs every 10-15 min. Slower than taxi (60-75 min) but no transfers. Use a Tarjeta CDMX card; cash not accepted.

Match Day Plan

The 3-Hour Rule

FIFA security perimeters at Estadio Azteca extend ~500m from the stadium with bag checks at multiple rings. Combined with altitude-adjusted slower walking pace, plan to arrive 3 hours before kickoff.

1
Eat early — but not too early. CDMX restaurants near the stadium are limited; eat in Centro/Roma/Coyoacán before heading south. Avoid heavy mole or chiles in the 3 hours before kickoff to prevent altitude+spice nausea.
2
Hydrate. Altitude (2,240m) means dehydration hits faster. Carry a sealed water bottle (FIFA-approved) — empty plastic bottles are usually allowed inside, sealed water at security checkpoint.
3
Take the Metro by 3 hours pre-kickoff. Línea 2 (blue) → Tasqueña → Tren Ligero → Estadio Azteca. Allow 90 min from Centro Histórico. The Tren Ligero gets crowded fast; standing-room only the closer to kickoff.
4
Walk the 10 minutes from Tren Ligero to gates. Well-signed, full of fellow fans. Hawkers sell jerseys, scarves, tequila bottles — bargain to 50% of the asking price. Don't buy "tickets" from anyone outside the stadium.
5
Security: 60-75 min. FIFA security at Azteca runs multiple rings. Have your phone (e-ticket) ready, government ID matching the ticket name, no large bags (max 25cm × 25cm × 15cm), no professional cameras, no liquids except sealed water.
6
Post-match: avoid the immediate rush. Tren Ligero will be a crush for 30-60 min. Either stay in your seat for 15 min, or walk 15 min to Huipulco Metro station for a less-packed ride back. Uber surge will be 2-3x for 90 min post-final-whistle.
⚠️ Estadio Azteca structural monitoring (June 2026): Multiple media reports (including NASA-referenced seismic data coverage) document ongoing ground subsidence beneath Estadio Azteca, a known geological issue for the Mexico City lake-bed area. Loose concrete and structural deficiencies have been flagged during pre-tournament preparations. FIFA and stadium authorities have stated the venue is safe and cleared for play. Exercise usual caution: avoid standing under upper-tier overhangs; report any loose material to security; follow evacuation signage. Standard precaution, not a reason to avoid attending.
Altitude warning: Mexico City sits at 2,240m / 7,350 ft — significant for sea-level visitors. First 24-48 hours feel breathless. Symptoms of mild altitude sickness: headache, fatigue, slight nausea. Acclimatize 1-2 days before the match. Avoid alcohol on day 1, hydrate aggressively, walk slower than instinct says. Pharmacies sell "Sorojchi Pills" ($5-10 USD) — caffeine + aspirin combo, helpful for some.

Around the City

Daily Transit

Beyond match days, CDMX has one of the best transit systems in the Americas. Metro is cheap and fast for long trips; Uber/Didi for door-to-door; Cablebús aerial trams (since 2021) for the steep peripheral neighborhoods.

🚇
Metro
$5 MXN ($0.30) per ride. 12 lines, 195 stations, runs 5 AM-midnight. Fastest way across the city. Buy Tarjeta CDMX rechargeable card. Avoid Línea 1 (pink) and Línea 8 (green) at rush hour — pickpocket-heavy. Línea 9 (brown), Línea 12 (gold) are safer and modern.
🚌
Metrobús & Trolebús
$6 MXN. BRT (bus rapid transit) on dedicated lanes. Línea 7 along Reforma double-decker — great for Reforma-Chapultepec sightseeing. Trolebús lines complement Metro in central neighborhoods. Same Tarjeta CDMX card works.
🚠
Cablebús
$7 MXN. Aerial cable cars connecting peripheral hillside neighborhoods to Metro. Línea 1 (Cuautepec) and Línea 2 (Iztapalapa) are the tourist-friendly routes — stunning city views. Mostly for daily commuter use, but worth a one-way ride for the panorama.
🚲
Ecobici (bike share)
$118 MXN ($7) for 7 days. 480+ stations across Roma, Condesa, Centro, Polanco, Reforma. Sign up online at ecobici.cdmx.gob.mx with passport. Best for the flat central neighborhoods; avoid uphill toward the south/west.
🚕
Avoid: Street taxis
Do NOT hail street taxis ("libre" or "Sitio") — meter scams, unauthorized fares, occasional safety issues. Use Uber, Didi, or app-based Beat instead. If you must take a taxi, take only one called from a hotel reception or restaurant.
🚶
Walking neighborhoods
Roma, Condesa, Polanco, Coyoacán, Centro Histórico are the best walking neighborhoods. Sidewalks are decent in central CDMX, less so in peripheries. Cross only at lights — driver yielding is informal at best.
