Tipping in New York

The Tipping Guide

Tipping in the United States is not optional in most service contexts — it is how service workers earn a living wage. Not tipping is considered very rude and can cause confrontation. Budget for it.

New York Sales Tax: New York state sales tax is 7.25%, but NYC County adds local taxes for a total of around 9.5%. This is added at checkout — prices on menus and tags do not include tax. Budget accordingly: a $20 meal becomes $21.90 before tip.

Budget Tips

Shop at Trader Joe's — New York's beloved grocery chain is everywhere in New York and significantly cheaper than Whole Foods or Kroger. Great for breakfast, picnic supplies, and late-night snacks.
NJ Transit beats rideshare every time — $1.75 vs $30-80 on match days. Get a OMNY card at any station and use it on the NJ Transit, A Line, B Line, and MTA buses.
The Getty Center, the American Museum of Natural History, and Empire State Building all have free general admission — three world-class NYC experiences at no cost.
Eat at taquerias and food trucks — the best Mexican food in NYC is cheap. Mariscos Jaliscos in Sunset Park, Brooklyn serves $3–4 shrimp tacos that are nationally famous.
Midtown Manhattan Bowl, Greek Theatre, and Levitt Pavilion all run cheap or free summer concerts during World Cup weeks. Check the schedules.
Book hotels now — prices rise every week as the tournament approaches. Booking 3+ months out saves 30–50% vs. last-minute rates during match weeks.
Group dining at NYC pizza (Park's BBQ, Quarters) — splitting a tableside grill feast costs $40–50/person but feeds way more than the equivalent dollars at a sit-down restaurant.
