Following South Korea Across Mexico

South Korea drew the most distinctive route of any team — all three group stage matches in Mexico. Two at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara (Czechia, then Mexico — the host-nation showdown), one at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey (South Africa). Zero US group games. This is the only team-of-interest page on this site where the entire group stage happens outside the United States. The good news: Mexico is visa-exempt for Korean passports, the FMM permit is free and electronic, and the kickoffs all land in primetime morning Korea time — perfect for breakfast watch parties back home.

🇰🇷 South Korea 🇲🇽 Mexico 🇨🇿 Czechia 🇿🇦 South Africa Group A

Group Stage Schedule

Two Cities, One Country

All three Korea group matches are confirmed via FIFA — and all three are in Mexico. Two in Guadalajara (Estadio Akron, also called Estadio Chivas), one in Monterrey (Estadio BBVA, in suburb Guadalupe). The schedule has a 13-day gap from Czechia to South Africa — long enough to base in Guadalajara for 9 days, then fly to Monterrey. None of these match cards link to a host-city guide on this site because we don't cover the Mexican host cities — but practical Mexico travel notes are below.

Jun 11Thursday
8:00 PM Mexico CT
10 PM ET · 11 AM Fri KST
South Korea vs Czechia
Estadio Akron · Zapopan (Guadalajara), Mexico · 🇲🇽 The opener — Tournament Day 1
Tournament Day 1, the same day Mexico opens at Azteca. Czechia are tactical, defensive, hard to break down — but lacking elite attackers. Korea should have the upper hand on talent. The 11 AM Friday KST kickoff is perfect for at-home Korean breakfast viewing. Estadio Akron is the home of Chivas (Liga MX); capacity 49,800. Korean passport holders are visa-exempt for Mexico — bring your passport plus the electronic FMM tourist permit (inm.gob.mx/fmme, free).
Jun 18Thursday
7:00 PM Mexico CT
9 PM ET · 10 AM Fri KST
South Korea vs Mexico
Estadio Akron · Zapopan (Guadalajara), Mexico · 🇲🇽 The host-nation match
The biggest match of Korea's group — vs the host nation, in their own country. Mexico will own the stadium atmosphere; expect 95% green-and-white crowd. The Korean section will be small (perhaps 5,000-8,000) but loud, organized, and deeply traveled. Same Estadio Akron as Match 1 — full familiarity. The Korean diaspora in Guadalajara is small but real (Samsung/Hyundai/LG industrial expats), and they'll turn out. 10 AM Friday morning back home is excellent breakfast TV.
Jun 24Wednesday
7:00 PM Mexico CT
9 PM ET · 10 AM Thu KST
South Korea vs South Africa
Estadio BBVA · Guadalupe (Monterrey), Mexico · 🇲🇽 The group decider
Group A's group decider for Korea. South Africa qualified after a long absence — pacy, technically sound under Hugo Broos, but unlikely to threaten Korea on talent. By matchday 3 the table will be tight; Korea may need a result for top-2 finish. Estadio BBVA is in Guadalupe, ~25 min from central Monterrey; capacity 53,500. Direct flights GDL → MTY on Volaris and AeroMéxico (~1h 30min, $80-180). The 10 AM Thursday KST kickoff is morning TV in Korea.

Itinerary

The 14-Day All-Mexico Run

From the Czechia opener to the South Africa closer is 14 days. Korean Air operates the only direct ICN → MEX route (KE901 daily, ~14h), so most fans will route via Mexico City, then connect to Guadalajara. Alternative: connect via LAX, JFK, or DFW — but that adds an extra immigration touchpoint and effectively requires a US ESTA.

Jun 8–9
Mon-Tue
Fly Korea → Mexico. Best routes: Korean Air ICN → MEX direct (14h, the only one-stop option), or Asiana ICN → LAX + AeroMéxico to MEX/GDL (with US ESTA), or Korean Air ICN → DFW + AA to GDL (with US ESTA). Most fans take the direct Korean Air. After arriving MEX, take a 45-min flight to Guadalajara on Volaris or AeroMéxico (~$80-150). Allow at least 1 day before the Czechia match for the 14-hour eastbound time-zone shift — the worst direction of jet lag.
Jun 10
Wed
Settle in Guadalajara. Mexico's third-largest city (~1.5M, metro 5M) — birthplace of mariachi, tequila town next door, the artisan district of Tlaquepaque, the Plaza Tapatía. Korean expat presence is small but visible — the Hyundai-Mobis plant in nearby Salamanca, Samsung Electronics in Querétaro. Korean restaurant cluster in Guadalajara: Mr. Sushi (Korean-Japanese fusion), Hwa Kwan. Pre-match in Plaza Mexico (Zapopan) near the stadium.
Jun 11
Thu
South Korea vs Czechia · Estadio Akron · 8 PM Mexico CT (11 AM Fri KST). Take Uber or taxi to Zapopan (~30 min from central GDL); SITEUR public transit BRT Macrobus also works. Allow 1.5 hours for transit and security. Pre-match in Plaza del Sol shopping district (15 min from stadium) or any of the GDL Korean restaurants. The Taeguk Warriors banner culture is one of the most organized at any World Cup — expect coordinated red blocks and "Daehan Minguk!" chants.
Jun 12–17
Fri-Wed
6 days off — stay in Guadalajara. The big advantage of two matches in the same city: don't move. Use the gap for Tequila town (60 min west — UNESCO heritage, Jose Cuervo distillery tours), Lake Chapala (45 min south — Mexico's largest lake, popular with North American retirees), Tlaquepaque (artisan district), or other group-stage matchdays at Estadio Akron. Korean food crawl: explore Hwa Kwan and the small Korean grocery on Av. Vallarta.
Jun 18
Thu
South Korea vs Mexico · Estadio Akron · 7 PM Mexico CT (10 AM Fri KST). The host-nation match. Expect peak local-hostility atmosphere — Mexican fans will fill the stadium, and the chant "¡Eh, puto!" (FIFA-fined but still common) may surface during goal kicks. Korean fans should arrive early, stay in groups, and stick to designated Korean sections. Same Estadio Akron logistics as Match 1. Post-match: stay in Guadalajara overnight before flying to Monterrey.
Jun 19–22
Fri-Mon
4 days, Guadalajara → Monterrey. Direct flights run on Volaris, AeroMéxico, and VivaAerobus (~1h 30min, $80–$200). Most fans will fly Sun or Mon. Use the gap for Monterrey's mountains (Cerro de la Silla — the iconic saddle-shaped peak), Barrio Antiguo (Old Quarter), Macroplaza (one of the largest plazas in the world), El Faro de Comercio. Korean expat community in Monterrey is significant — Hyundai, Kia, LG, Samsung all have manufacturing nearby.
Jun 24
Wed
South Korea vs South Africa · Estadio BBVA · 7 PM Mexico CT (10 AM Thu KST). Estadio BBVA is in Guadalupe, ~25 min from central Monterrey by Uber. Pre-match in Barrio Antiguo for Korean BBQ at Bonjuk Korean BBQ (Garza García) or generic parrilla. Allow 1 hour for transit. Post-match: head to Calzada Madero for late-night taquerías and beer.

Knockout decisions. If Korea advance: Group A winners and runners-up may move into US venues for R32 onwards. The bracket structure means Korea could play knockouts at Houston, LA, KC, Atlanta, or other US host cities — making the US ESTA important to file before flying out from Korea, even if you only need it for knockout matches. If Korea finish 3rd (best 3rd-place teams advance), bracket-volatile. If Korea go out: enjoy Mexico City for a few days before flying home.
The Mexico-only group makes this the cheapest contender's group-stage trip. Hotels in Guadalajara and Monterrey are 30-50% cheaper than US host cities (~$80-150/night for solid 4-star, vs $200-400 in US). Food is much cheaper (a great parrilla dinner is $25 vs $80 in US). Tickets are the same FIFA price. Mexico flights between cities are short and cheap. The full group-stage trip lands around ₩2.5–4.5 million per person, materially cheaper than fans tracking USA-based teams.
File the US ESTA anyway. Even though Korea's group is entirely in Mexico, most international flights to Mexico from Korea route through US hubs (LAX, DFW, JFK) — where you'll need to clear US immigration, even on a connecting flight. The ESTA also unlocks knockout-round US travel if Korea advances. $21 at esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Apply 2+ weeks before flying. Full ESTA guide.

If South Korea advance

The Knockout Path

2026 uses a 32-team knockout bracket. Top 2 from each group plus 8 best 3rd-place teams advance. Korea have made the Round of 16 in three of the last six World Cups — but never advanced past R16 except as 2002 hosts (when they reached the SF). The unique advantage of Group A: the bracket structure pulls Korea into US venues immediately if they advance.

🥇
If Korea win Group A
Round of 32: Likely a US host city — possibly Houston, LA, or Atlanta bracket-dependent (Group A winners cross with another group's runner-up). This is when the US ESTA becomes essential — file before leaving Korea. Round of 16: Bracket-dependent. Quarterfinal: The west-coast or central QFs (LA Jul 10, KC Jul 11) are the obvious paths.
🥈
If Korea finish 2nd
Round of 32: Bracket flips — could end up at MetLife, Atlanta, or Boston (east coast). Round of 16: Bracket-dependent. Quarterfinal: The east-coast QFs (MetLife Jul 11, Boston Jul 9) come into play.
🥉
Semifinal venues
Two semis: Atlanta (Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Jul 14) and Dallas (Dallas Stadium, Jul 15). Either is plausible. Both are 5-7 hour flights from Mexico.
🏆
The Final
Sunday July 19, 3 PM ET / 4 AM Mon KST, MetLife Stadium (East Rutherford, NJ). Korea have never reached a World Cup final. Their best finish is 4th place in 2002 (as co-hosts with Japan, beat Italy and Spain in knockout). The 2022 squad reached R16 and lost to Brazil 4-1. Son Heung-min will be 33-34 by tournament time — likely his last World Cup at the highest level. New York guide.

Supporter Culture & Watch Hubs

The Korean-American Network

There are an estimated 2 million Korean-Americans — concentrated in LA Koreatown (largest in the US, ~120k Korean speakers), NYC (Flushing/Bayside in Queens, Palisades Park NJ, Fort Lee NJ), Atlanta (Duluth/Suwanee suburbs), Northern Virginia/DC, and Bay Area. While Korea's group stage is in Mexico, US-based Korean fans will turn out in massive numbers for any Korea knockout match in the US.

🇲🇽
Guadalajara Korean cluster
Small but real. Hyundai-Mobis has a plant in nearby Salamanca; some Samsung/LG executives based in GDL. Hwa Kwan, Mr. Sushi (Korean-Japanese fusion), Soju Bar (Plaza del Sol). Korean grocery on Av. Vallarta. The Korean Catholic parish of Guadalajara hosts cultural events. Match-day crowds will be small but visible — bring "Daehan Minguk" red shirts and Taegukgi flags.
🏭
Monterrey Korean hubs
Significantly larger. Kia Motors América has a manufacturing plant in nearby Pesquería; Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, POSCO all have facilities. The Korean expat community in MTY is ~3,000-5,000. Bonjuk Korean BBQ (Garza García), San San (Vasconcelos), Korean Mart. The Korean Cultural Center of Monterrey hosts events.
🇺🇸
LA Koreatown — the global hub
If Korea advance to the knockouts and play in LA, LA Koreatown will be the loudest Korean fan section in the entire 2026 tournament. K-Town runs along Wilshire and Olympic Blvd from Vermont to Western — hundreds of Korean restaurants, BBQ, karaoke, soju bars. Madang Mall, Madang Courtyard are the cultural anchors. For knockouts in LA: Sofi/Rose Bowl matchdays will see Wilshire Blvd shut down with Korean fan parties.
📣
KFA & supporter culture
The KFA (Korean Football Association, 대한축구협회) operates an official tournament-ticket allocation through kfa.or.kr. Unofficial fan culture revolves around "Daehan Minguk!" (대한민국, "Republic of Korea") chants — a 4-clap rhythmic chant globalized by the 2002 World Cup. The "Red Devils" (Boulgun Akma, 붉은악마) are the official supporter group, with red shirts, red bandanas, and devil-horn face paint. Organized red blocks are world-class.
📺
Korean broadcast in the US
For non-attended matches: KBS, MBC, SBS share Korea's domestic World Cup rights — both watchable in the US via VPN with a Korean login (KBS Kong app, Wavve). Telemundo has Spanish-language US rights; Fox/FS1 for English. Most LA Koreatown venues (KP Restaurant, Beer Belly) and NYC Flushing venues will run KBS/MBC live via VPN/satellite during matchdays.
Time-zone analysis
Korea time (KST) = GMT+9, no DST. Match 1 Czechia: 11 AM Friday KST — perfect breakfast/late-morning slot. Match 2 Mexico: 10 AM Friday KST — same Friday, breakfast. Match 3 South Africa: 10 AM Thursday KST — breakfast. All three matches land in late-morning Korea, the friendliest schedule of any AFC team. The Mexico-time-zone advantage for Asia is real.

For Korean Fans Specifically

The Practical Stuff

🛂
Mexico FMM + US ESTA
Korean passport holders are visa-exempt for Mexico — bring your passport plus the electronic FMM tourist permit (inm.gob.mx/fmme, free, fill before flight, valid 180 days). For US connections (LAX, DFW, JFK layovers) and potential knockout travel, file a US ESTA ($21 at esta.cbp.dhs.gov) before flying — even if your group stage is entirely in Mexico, most direct/one-stop flights from Korea route via the US for Mexico, requiring ESTA for the layover. Full visa & ESTA guide.
📱
Phone & data
Korean carriers (SK Telecom, KT, LG U+) charge ₩9,900-14,900/day for Mexico/US roaming. SKT's "T로밍 OnePass" is a popular weekly pass. An eSIM is much cheaper — Airalo regional plans cover both US and Mexico with 5 GB for ~$15. Most modern iPhones (XS+) and Galaxies (S20+) support eSIM (Korean carriers unlock most phones for eSIM). eSIM setup guide.
💴
Currency & tipping
₩/MXN/$ rates: $1 ≈ ₩1,400-1,500, MXN 19-22. Use Wise, Travel Wallet (KB), or Toss Foreign for fee-free spending — Korean banks (KB, Shinhan, Woori) charge ~3% foreign-transaction fees. Tipping is mandatory in the US (18-22% restaurants, 15-20% Uber). Mexico is similar: 10-15% standard. Korea's "no tipping" culture does NOT apply in either country — locals expect tips and may pursue you for them.
🔌
Plugs & voltage
Korea uses Type C/F (Schuko-style, the same as continental Europe); the US and Mexico both use Type A/B (flat 2-pin). Bring an adapter — ₩3,000-5,000 in any Korean airport, $5-10 in a US/Mexico drugstore. Voltage: Korea is 220V; US/Mexico is 120V. Modern phone chargers and laptops auto-switch; don't bring hair dryers or curling irons rated only for 220V — they'll burn out instantly on US/Mexico power.
🌡️
Mexico altitude & weather
Guadalajara: 1,566m altitude (5,138ft), 25-30°C (77-86°F), dry — pleasant for evening kickoffs. Monterrey: 540m altitude (1,775ft), 30-35°C (86-95°F) and dry — hotter than GDL but nothing like Texas humidity. Both stadiums are open-air. Bring sunscreen for daytime, a light jacket for evenings (mountain air cools quickly post-sundown).
🛬
Direct flights from Korea
Seoul Incheon (ICN): Korean Air operates the only direct ICN → Mexico City (KE901, daily, ~14h). For Mexico via US: Korean Air, Asiana, Delta, United, AA all run ICN → LAX, JFK, IAD, ORD, ATL, SFO with onward to MEX/GDL/MTY (~16-20h total). For Monterrey direct, no options — connect via MEX, DFW, or LAX. For knockouts in US: Korean Air ICN → JFK/LAX/IAD direct daily; Delta/United also route via Tokyo NRT.
