Beyond the City

πŸš— Toronto Day Trips

Niagara Falls is the obvious one β€” and it's worth it. But Toronto sits inside an hour or two of the Niagara region, the Stratford Festival, Lake Ontario beaches and Algonquin's canoe routes. Match-day fans with a free morning have surprisingly good options if they're willing to rent a car or hop the GO Train.

The Big One

Niagara Falls

130 km south of Toronto. 1.5–2 hours by car via the QEW; ~2 hours by GO Train with a transfer at Burlington β€” roughly CA$25 each way. The Falls themselves are the headline, but the surrounding 20 km has estate visits, a charming heritage town, and a casino strip.

🚀
Hornblower Voyage to the Falls
~CA$32 for the boat ride into the Horseshoe Falls mist. Provided poncho is worthless β€” wear waterproof layers. Lines start early; book a timed ticket online.
🌊
Journey Behind the Falls
~CA$25. Tunnel network behind the cataract with two viewing portals + a lower observation deck. Pairs well with Hornblower in the same morning.
πŸ—Ό
Skylon Tower
236-m observation deck overlooking both falls. Restaurant rotates once per hour. Better sunset photos than the boat.
🍷
Niagara-on-the-Lake
10 km from the Falls. Ontario's prettiest small town β€” heritage main street, Shaw Festival theatre season May–Oct, base for the Niagara region. Easy to pair with Falls in one long day.
Falls timing trick: Take the 7am GO Train, do Hornblower at 9am before the cruise crowds, lunch in Niagara-on-the-Lake, explore the region on the way back. Home by 6pm. The 9am tour bus crowd is your enemy.

Niagara Region

Niagara Estates & Farms

Forty estates cluster between Niagara-on-the-Lake and the escarpment. The region is known for Rieslings, Pinot Noirs, and icewine. Most tastings CA$10–20, often refunded with a purchase.

❄️
Inniskillin
Icewine pioneer β€” the winery that put Ontario on the international map in 1991. Tasting flights anchored by Vidal and Cabernet Franc icewines.
🍷
Peller Estates
10X icewine experience: tasting in a -10Β°C ice lounge wearing supplied parkas. Restaurant on-site is one of Niagara's best.
πŸ’
Wayne Gretzky Estates
Yes, that Gretzky. Whisky distillery + winery on one property, family-friendly, ice rink in winter. Tour-bus magnet but the No. 99 Estates Red is solid.
πŸ‡
Two Sisters Vineyards
Mediterranean villa overlooking the vines. Italian-leaning reds, on-site Kitchen76 restaurant. Reserve for tastings on weekends.
Don't drive if you're doing estate tastings. Book a guided shuttle tour β€” most include hotel pickup, 3 estate stops + Falls, lunch. CA$120–200 per person from Toronto.

Half-Day

Toronto Islands

Technically inside city limits, but it functions as a day-trip. 8-minute ferry from Jack Layton Terminal at the foot of Bay Street; the islands are car-free.

⛴️
Three islands, one network
Centre, Ward's, and Algonquin connected by paths and bridges. Walk the full chain in 90 minutes; rent a bike for 30.
πŸ–οΈ
Hanlan's Point
West end. Quietest beach. Clothing-optional section at the far north end β€” plan accordingly. Best swimming when Lake Ontario warms by mid-June.
🎑
Centreville Amusement Park
Centre Island. 30+ rides, antique carousel, Far Enough Farm petting zoo. Day pass for kids. Open mid-May–Labour Day.
🚴
Bike rentals
Toronto Island Bicycle Rental at Centre Island pier. Hourly + daily; tandems, kid trailers, quadricycles. Sunset ride back to the ferry is the move.

Further Afield

Stratford, PEC, Blue Mountain

🎭
Stratford, Ontario
150 km W, ~2 hours by car or VIA Rail. Stratford Festival May–Oct β€” North America's largest classical-rep theatre festival. Charming Victorian downtown on the Avon River.
πŸ‡
Prince Edward County (PEC)
2 hours east. Small wineries, Sandbanks Provincial Park beaches, restored barn restaurants. Better as overnight; doable as long day if you start at 7am.
⛰️
Blue Mountain / Collingwood
2 hours NW, on Georgian Bay. Ski resort in winter, hiking village in summer β€” Scenic Caves, the Bruce Trail, Blue Mountain Village shops + patios.
πŸ›Ά
Algonquin Park
