Mexico City has two airports — and which one your flight lands at matters more than for any other host city. MEX (Benito Juárez) is the legacy airport in eastern CDMX, ~13 km from Estadio Azteca. AIFA (Felipe Ángeles) opened in 2022 in Tecámac, ~50 km north — a 60-90 minute drive from central CDMX with no Metro link. Volaris, Viva Aerobus, some cargo carriers, and a growing list of international flights have shifted to AIFA. Always confirm the IATA code on your ticket.
⚠️ The biggest fan trap of the tournament: Booking sites show "Mexico City" without distinguishing MEX from AIFA. If you land at AIFA expecting MEX, you're 50 km north of where you wanted to be. Always check your ticket: MEX = central CDMX. NLU/AIFA = Felipe Ángeles, an hour-plus by ground. Choose your hotel pickup logistics accordingly.
The Two Airports
MEX vs AIFA
For most international fans, MEX is where you want to land. AIFA is real and growing, but its ground-transit story is significantly worse — long drives, transfer-heavy public transit, no Metro.
🛬
MEX (Benito Juárez)
Eastern CDMX, ~5 km from Zócalo, ~13 km from Estadio Azteca. T1: international + domestic mix (older, more crowded). T2: Aeroméxico hub + SkyTeam. Free Aerotrén connects them (ticketed pax only, ~10 min). Most full-service international flights land here: Aeroméxico, AA, DL, UA, AC, IB, AF, KL, LH, BA, JL, KE.
🛫
AIFA (Felipe Ángeles)
Tecámac, México State, ~50 km north of central CDMX. Single passenger terminal, opened 2022. Volaris, Viva Aerobus, some Aeroméxico, Copa, Turkish Airlines limited, plus a few US LCC routes. ~60-90 min by car to central CDMX in good traffic, 2+ hours in bad. Verify ground-transit options below before booking AIFA flights.
Immigration & Customs
FMM & FIFA Lane
US fans need a passport (no visa). Mexico's Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM) is now electronic for most air arrivals — auto-filled from airline data, no paper card at major airports as of 2023+. Mexico has no eTA / ESTA-style pre-arrival; entry happens at the immigration counter (Migración).
📘
FMM (electronic)
For air arrivals at MEX/AIFA, the FMM is electronic — auto-issued via the airline's manifest. You may receive a stamped paper slip at immigration; keep it for departure (some airlines still ask for it). For land border crossings (Houston → Monterrey), the FMM is paper and there's a small fee.
⚡
FIFA priority lane
INM has announced 50 additional immigration officers and a FIFA priority lane at MEX T1, T2, and AIFA for ticketed match-day passengers — verify status on gob.mx/inm. Bring printed FIFA Fan Pass + match ticket if asked.
⏱️
Wait times
MEX T1 arrivals are notorious — 60-120 min on heavy days. T2 and AIFA tend to move faster but spike at match-day surge. INM has added staff for the tournament window. Don't book a same-day connection from MEX without 4+ hours buffer.
Ground Transit From MEX
MEX → City
From MEX, your three sane options are: authorized taxi (voucher-based, fast, safe), Uber (legal at MEX, slightly cheaper), or Metrobús Línea 4 (cheap, slow with luggage). Avoid libre taxis — see warning below.
🚖
Authorized taxi (Sitio 300 / Yellow)
~$250-350 MXN to Centro, ~$400-500 MXN to Coyoacán / Azteca area. Buy the voucher inside the terminal at the official desk before you exit. Pre-priced by zone, no metering, no surprises.
🚗
Uber / Didi
Both legal at MEX. $200-350 MXN to Centro. Designated rideshare pickup zone — exit terminal, follow signs (don't accept "Uber" drivers who approach inside). Verify license plate matches the app.
🚌
Metrobús Línea 4
$30 MXN with prepaid card. Direct from MEX to Buenavista (north Centro) — better for luggage than Metro. Buy a Tarjeta CDMX card at the kiosk.
🚇
Metro Línea 5
$5 MXN. Terminal Aérea station. Slow, crowded, not luggage-friendly. Only worth it if you're traveling light and budget-conscious — connect to Pantitlán for transfers to Líneas 9, 1, A.
🏟️
MEX → Estadio Azteca
No direct rail. Metro 5 → 9 → Tasqueña → Tren Ligero → Estadio Azteca = ~75-90 min total, $5 MXN. Or take a taxi/Uber to your hotel first, then Metro to the match. Plan match-day allowance separately.
🛍️
Hotel shuttles
Most full-service Polanco / Roma / Centro hotels offer airport pickup; arrange in advance. Convenient with luggage at typical rates of $400-700 MXN one-way.
Ground Transit From AIFA
AIFA → City
If you land at AIFA, factor 60-90 minutes minimum to central CDMX. Options are limited and slower than from MEX.
🚖
Authorized taxi from AIFA
~$700-900 MXN to central CDMX. Voucher-based at AIFA's official desk. ~60-90 min in good traffic, 2+ hours match-day.
🚗
Uber from AIFA
Legalized at AIFA in 2024. ~$500-800 MXN, similar travel time. Designated pickup zone.
🚄
Mexibús + Suburbano
AIFA shuttle bus to Indios Verdes Metro (Línea 3), ~$40 MXN, ~40 min. Or Mexibús + Tren Suburbano → Buenavista, ~90 min total. The Tren Suburbano AIFA extension has been opening in stages — verify current routing on suburbano.com.mx.
🏟️
AIFA → Azteca
Brutal route — AIFA is in the far north, Azteca in the far south. Allow 2+ hours minimum via taxi/Uber, or 3+ hours via Mexibús → Metro. If you're flying for a match-day same-day arrival, fly into MEX, not AIFA.
⚠️ NEVER take a libre taxi from outside MEX or AIFA terminals. "Libre" (white-and-pink street taxis hailed curbside) have been linked to documented express kidnapping (secuestro exprés) cases at MEX. Always buy your taxi voucher inside the terminal, or use Uber/Didi from the designated rideshare zone. Drivers approaching you inside the arrivals hall offering rides are unauthorized — refuse and walk past.
Money, Phones, Practicalities
On Arrival
🏦
ATMs & FX
Use major-bank ATMs only: Citibanamex, BBVA, Santander, HSBC, Banorte. AVOID standalone non-major ATMs (Cibanco, Inbursa generic units, "Cash4U"-style machines) — they round MXN withdrawals down and add 80-120 MXN fees per transaction. Currency exchange counters at MEX have ~6-8% spread; ATM is better.
📶
SIM / eSIM
Telcel has the best coverage at Estadio Azteca and across CDMX. AT&T Mexico and Movistar are alternatives. Prepaid SIMs available at both MEX terminals + AIFA. Airalo / Holafly eSIM for Mexico is straightforward and activates before you land.
💵
Currency
Mexican peso (MXN). $1 USD ≈ 17-19 MXN. Cards widely accepted in Roma / Condesa / Polanco; cash dominant in markets, taquerías, street food, and outside major neighborhoods. Tip 10-15% in restaurants.
📅
2026 quirks
MEX has reopened additional T1 gates for the tournament. AIFA is heavily promoting itself as the "FIFA-ready alternative" but ground-transit reality means MEX is preferred for most fans. Watch for "AIFA shuttle to Azteca" promotions — verify legitimacy before paying.
Common pitfalls: ① Always confirm IATA code (MEX vs NLU/AIFA) before booking. ② Buy taxi vouchers inside the terminal, never accept rides from approached drivers. ③ Avoid non-major-bank ATMs — they hit you with poor rates plus a flat fee. ④ The FMM is electronic at airports — you may not get a paper slip; that's normal. ⑤ Mexico City sits at 2,240m altitude — see the logistics page for altitude prep.
