Estadio BBVA & the 4 Matches

Estadio BBVA — nicknamed "El Gigante de Acero" (The Steel Giant) — hosts 4 World Cup 2026 matches in Guadalupe, the eastern Monterrey suburb. The 53,500-capacity steel-and-glass cathedral opened in 2015 as the home of C.F. Monterrey (Rayados), the most successful CONCACAF club of the modern era. The Group A decider South Africa vs South Korea on Jun 24, two Group F fixtures (Sweden-Tunisia, Japan-Tunisia), and a Round of 32 knockout. Backdrop: the dramatic Sierra Madre Oriental, with Cerro de la Silla visible from the upper tiers — one of football's most beautiful natural settings.

New in 2026: The 48-team format and Round of 32 explained. The 2026 World Cup is the first ever with 48 teams — up from 32. Here's how the bracket works: 48 teams are split into 12 groups of 4. The top 2 teams from each group (24 teams) plus the 8 best third-place finishers (8 teams) advance — giving 32 teams in total. These 32 teams then play the Round of 32 (the new first knockout round, replacing what used to be the Round of 16 in old formats). After that: Round of 16 → Quarterfinals → Semifinals → Final. This means your team now has a third-place safety net in the group stage — finishing 3rd no longer automatically eliminates you.

The Stadium

Estadio BBVA

Estadio BBVA opened in 2015 in Guadalupe, ~10 km east of central Monterrey, replacing the older Estadio Tecnológico. Architecturally striking — a black-and-orange exposed-steel exterior, 53,500 capacity, dramatic Sierra Madre backdrop. Home of C.F. Monterrey (Rayados), the Liga MX powerhouse with 5 CONCACAF Champions League titles (most ever). The "Steel Giant" nickname references both Monterrey's industrial heritage and the stadium's exposed-steel structure.
