Airport Arrival Guide

✈️ Vancouver YVR

Vancouver International (YVR) sits on Sea Island in Richmond — ~12 km south of downtown, ~14 km from BC Place. The Canada Line SkyTrain runs direct from the terminal to Stadium-Chinatown station in ~30 minutes; it's one of the cleanest airport-to-stadium connections in North America. US fans only need a passport (no eTA); other nationalities need a Canadian eTA — apply at canada.ca/eta for $7 CAD before flying.

The Airport

YVR Overview

YVR is consistently ranked among the world's best airports for design and traveler experience. The Main Terminal is split into Domestic, International, and a US Transborder wing — Vancouver is one of only eight Canadian airports with US CBP pre-clearance, which matters for fans flying back through SEA, LAX, or other US gateways.

🛬
Main Terminal
Domestic + International + US Transborder wing under one roof. Direct flights from major US gateways (SEA, PDX, SFO, LAX, ORD, JFK, EWR, BOS, ATL, MIA, IAH, DFW, DEN, MSP, HNL), Europe (LHR, CDG, FRA, AMS, ZRH, IST), Asia (HKG, NRT, HND, ICN, PVG, DEL, SIN, TPE), Oceania (SYD, AKL).
🇺🇸
US pre-clearance
Vancouver is one of 8 Canadian airports with US CBP pre-clearance — for outbound US flights, you clear US immigration at YVR before departure and arrive in the US as a domestic flight. Saves time on the return leg.
🛩️
South Terminal
Smaller, separate terminal for regional and floatplane flights to BC Interior and Vancouver Island. Not relevant for most international fans.

Immigration & Customs

Getting Through

US passport-holders enter visa-free. Visa-exempt visitors (UK, EU, Australia, Japan, Korea, etc.) need a Canadian eTA ($7 CAD, valid 5 years) — apply at canada.ca/eta before flying. Non-eTA-eligible nationalities need a temporary resident visa. Wait times: 20-40 min normal, expect 60+ min on match days.

📱
CBSA & ArriveCAN
Primary inspection kiosks (PIK) handle most arrivals; the ArriveCAN app's Advance CBSA Declaration is currently optional but speeds up processing.
Match-day capacity
YVR has added 4 international gate-positions for the tournament window, expanded check-in capacity, and is running 4-car Canada Line trains during peak match days (normally 2-car). Verify status on yvr.ca.
⏱️
Live wait times
YVR publishes live security and customs wait-time data at yvr.ca. NEXUS members keep their fast lane. Plan extra cushion for daytime arrivals when transatlantic and transpacific waves overlap.

Ground Transit

From YVR

The Canada Line SkyTrain is the dominant choice — direct to downtown, to Stadium-Chinatown for BC Place, to Waterfront Station for Gastown / cruise terminal. Taxis and rideshare also work; driving is rare for fly-in fans.

🚇
Canada Line SkyTrain
~$8-10 CAD with Compass / cash including AddFare. Direct from YVR-Airport station: ~26 min to Waterfront, ~30 min to Stadium-Chinatown (BC Place). YVR AddFare of $5 CAD applies only on trips originating at YVR, not the return — verify rates on translink.ca. Among the world's best airport-rail links.
🚖
YVR Taxi (flat-rate zones)
Downtown is Zone 1, ~$35-45 CAD flat. YVR Taxi Zone is curbside at arrivals with posted zone rates. Reject any driver approaching you inside the terminal — they're unauthorized.
🚗
Uber / Lyft
$30-50 CAD, ~25-35 min to downtown. Pickup at the designated rideshare zone. Verify driver license plate against the app.
🚐
Skylynx / regional bus
For fans staying outside the city — Skylynx runs YVR ↔ Squamish ↔ Whistler. Useful for ski-mountain stays. Standard adult fare ~$30-45 CAD depending on route.
🏟️
Direct to BC Place
Single ride: Canada Line YVR → Stadium-Chinatown station → 3-min walk to BC Place gates. Total ~30 min. The whole trip is one Compass tap (or ~$8-10 cash one-way).
⚠️
Pacific Blvd closure
Pacific Blvd is closed near BC Place from May 23 to late July 2026 (Cambie Bridge to Carrall St). Rideshare drop-off paths are rerouted; SkyTrain is strongly recommended. Map at vancouverfwc26.ca.

Money, Phones, Practicalities

On Arrival

🏦
ATMs & FX
Use Canadian-bank ATMs in the terminal: CIBC, RBC, TD, Scotiabank, HSBC. Avoid the standalone ICE Currency exchange booths — markups run 8-10%. A no-FX-fee debit card at a major-bank ATM is the cleanest option. Wise / Revolut work well too.
📶
SIM / eSIM
Airalo, Holafly, or Saily eSIM activate before you land. Physical prepaid SIMs from Bell, Rogers, Telus available at retail kiosks in arrivals. Vancouver's downtown coverage is excellent across all three carriers.
💵
Currency
Canadian dollar (CAD). $1 USD ≈ $1.35 CAD (verify). Cards accepted nearly everywhere; Apple Pay / Google Pay are universal. Tip 15-20% in restaurants.
🌧️
Weather on arrival
Vancouver June can deliver sun, drizzle, or both in the same afternoon. Pack a packable rain shell. The Canada Line is fully covered; you can land and reach BC Place without ever stepping outside in rain if you're efficient.
Common pitfalls: ① The $5 YVR AddFare applies only when boarding at the airport, not on the return — fans regularly tap an extra $5 unnecessarily on the return trip. ② Don't take rides from drivers who approach you — use the marked taxi rank or rideshare zone. ③ For US-bound returns, build extra time for US pre-clearance — line up at least 90 min before your flight to clear it on the YVR side. ④ Pacific Blvd closure (May 23 – late July) means SkyTrain is the only sane way to BC Place; don't try to drop off by car.
